Winter sports wrap-up

Boys Basketball

Despite a rough season, finishing 4-16, the team persevered through practices. Coach Don Cameron said it was an accomplishment for the team to keep working hard and going to practice despite the circumstances. According to Cameron, the team only had two or three bad practices and that is “a real tribute to them.” A season highlight occurred at Winfield when the Railers came back to win after being down by 13 at halftime.

Girls Basketball

The girls basketball team finished the regular season 15-5. The team added two more wins to its record, beating Hutchinson in the first game of sub-state and Emporia during sub-state finals. The Railer girls downed Emporia in overtime 60-59. They traveled to Topeka Thursday afternoon to compete in the first game of the class 5A state tournament. The Railers faced Bishop Carroll, but results were not available at press time.

 

Wrestling

The wrestling team finished fifth at regionals and third in league and also qualified seven wrestlers for state. At the state meet, Newton had two medalist. Freshman Quinton Harrison placed fourth, and junior David Garcia placed sixth.

 

Boys Swimming

After winning league for the fifth year in a row, the boys swim team advanced with seven swimmers competing at state. The team had numerous swimmers place and ended with a third place finish at state. Senior Ian Clark placed third in the breaststroke, senior John Wilks placed second in the 200 individual medley, and the Newton 200 medley relay placed first.

Bowling

With three bowlers medaling, the girls bowling team tied for second at league. Senior Shelby Gronau placed third, junior Cassidy Ashcraft placed seventh and sophomore Megan Cross placed eleventh. Sam Kier placed eleventh individually. At regionals the girls placed second, and the boys placed fourth. Junior Austin Jones and senior Anastasia Wacker placed second, Ashcraft placed third and Gronau placed eighth. The girls team qualified the whole team for state, and Jones qualified individually. Wacker medaled 19th, and the girls team placed fifth overall.
