Haiti calls for help–Victims of earthquake need our help
Ever since Jan. 12, the earthquake in Haiti and the mass destruction that followed have been a constant topic of discussion everywhere.
From aftershocks to collapsed cities and chaos to humanitarian aid, the earthquake and its survivors have created a situation that is affecting people worldwide. Despite the current economic crisis, Americans should still do as much as they can to contribute to relief work.
It is impossible to watch the news, turn on the radio or surf the Internet without hearing or seeing information about the aftermath. Relief efforts have been huge across the globe, and America seems to be at the forefront.
In a news story in Monday’s edition of the Washington Post, Haitian people called for help from America. Repeatedly, they asked America to take over the country, saying their government is unable to protect and provide for them. The Haitians even seem to think America is required to assist Haiti, because they claim America is “well organized” and the richest country in the world.
Although this is going a little far, Americans should help as much as they can. Yes, there is an economic crisis going on in America. No one has as much money as they would like and everyone is trying to stretch their dollars.
However, a large number of Haiti’s current population do not have any dollars to try to stretch. They literally have nothing. Citizens are living in parks in tents they bought from street vendors and taking it one day at a time, just trying to stay alive and find food to eat and give to their children.
Put yourself in their place. Imagine having your world change in an instant from a relatively secure and routine life to having nothing. Living in the streets, scrounging for food and never knowing what is going to happen.
There is more than one way to help Haitians. Texting ‘HAITI’ to ‘90999’ will add an extra $10 charge to your phone bill and the money will go to relief efforts. There are also many lists of aid organizations on the Internet.
If you cannot donate money, try donating time. Different volunteer options are also available. Two weeks ago, volunteers at the Kansas Coliseum packed 1 million meals for survivors.
Despite the economic problems in America, try to aid Haiti if possible. It does not have to be something huge, just do what you can. Every little bit helps.
