BPA competitors prepare with practice through ‘mock state’ events, competitions
Feb. 18-20, more than 500 students from Kansas high schools will gather in Wichita for the Business Professionals of America (BPA) State Leadership Conference. More than 40 of these students will represent Newton High School.
In December, students competed in a regional BPA competition, which BPA sponsor Melinda Rangel said was like a practice run for the state competition.
The state event involves more than 55 competitions. Students will compete in computer, objective and presentation events.
“(The competition involves) competitive events in different categories including marketing, accounting, computer technology and business administration,” senior Austin Burch, BPA president, said.
Tuesday night, the Newton High BPA had its own practice for the state competition. During its practice night, BPA invited six community leaders to judge the “mock state” event, which involved only Newton students. Students gave their presentations like they will at state.
“We get really good feedback, which helps us tremendously,” Rangel said. “It gives students ideas so they can make their presentations better.”
Burch and sophomore Levi Blaylock are confident they will do well at the state competition.
“(I hope to get) first place in everything. Our team is legit,” Burch said.
Blaylock agreed. He said the Small Business Management team, comprised of himself, Burch and sophomores Emily Runge and Jenna Rangel, will do well. He also said he will try to compete to the best of his abilities at the competition.
“I plan to do my best (in my events), but you never know what will happen,” Blaylock said. “I know I am going to give it 110 percent.”
